Week 1: Some Rules for Students and Teachers or Anybody Else

The authors of this list are John Cage and Sister Corita Kent. The list was created for a class Sister Corita taught in 1967-1968 but became popular due to John Cage. Cage was a composer whilst Kent was an educator and visual artist who mostly focused on social justice. Kent resonates with me the most because she tried making social change through her art and it changed throughout the years to reflect what the world was going through. The rule that feels most important to me is rule 6 "Nothing is a mistake. There is no win and no fail. There is only make." This feels important to me because artists can see the flaws in their work and might spend hours, days, months, or even years trying to finish one piece. However. nobody will see the flaws that we see and sometimes it is best to move on and not focus on the flaws because even if you think it is a failure, many others will see the intent and the message is more important.
